We are currently looking for an individual to join the Elevator Inspection Team within our Arizona Division of Occupational Safety & Health (ADOSH) Division, which is tasked with conducting enforcement safety inspections and investigations throughout Arizona of employers' workplaces to determine whether employers are complying with applicable occupational safety and health laws.

 

The purpose of the Elevator Inspector position is to ensure a safe and compliance environment for passengers and applicable materials traveling in or on applicable equipment throughout the State of Arizona as required by A.R.S. Title 23, Chapter2, and Article 12. The day-to-day responsibilities for an Elevator Inspector include prioritizing workloads, traveling to conduct required inspections and consultations, determining if equipment is compliant with current applicable codes, and writing the necessary reports to record findings of required inspections. The candidate appointed to this position will be expected to cover the Northern Arizona region for the majority of his/her time.

REQUIREMENTS

 

  • AZ Driver’s License Required

In-State travel is required.  Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment.  Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207 (12). Employees may be required to use their own transportation, as well as maintaining valid motor vehicle insurance and current Arizona vehicle registration; however, mileage will be reimbursed.

  • Applicants must, if selected for hire, possess or obtain, within 6 months of hire date, a “Certificate of Competency” from the State of Arizona Industrial Commission; OR have been certified by the National Associated Elevator Safety Authorities and have a minimum of five years experience, within the last ten years, in one or a combination of the following areas: Elevator inspection, construction, maintenance and/or repair.  Five years of experience in elevator inspection, construction, maintenance or repair.  Any combination of training and experience that meet the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) may be substituted.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

 

Knowledge of:

  • All applicable codes (i.e., A.A.C. A14.1, A17.2, A17.3, A17.4, A17.5, A18.1, A117.1, I.B.C., U.B.C., N.E.C., N.F.P.A., and other codes as applicable).
  • Applicable codes through regular training. All Elevator Inspectors attend workshops and seminars to acquire knowledge of new technology on equipment.
  • Microsoft Outlook, Word Excel and PowerPoint.

 

Skill in:

  • Evaluation, research and analytical skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to recognize unsafe conditions or equipment.
  • Recognizing elevator and escalator safety hazards during inspections.
  • Interpretation and review of submitted elevator shop drawings for compliance to elevator safety codes; use of test equipment for compliance to safety codes.
  • Interpreting the Arizona Elevator Act with rules and regulations for elevator owners/users and other interested parties; interpersonal relationships.

 

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively through oral, written and electronic communications.
  • Interact with elevator owners/ users, contractors, engineers, architects, etc.
  • Travel frequently.
  • Recognize and engage those with different backgrounds, characteristics, and perspectives to bridge gaps in understanding of differing viewpoints, as well as ensuring persons with diverse perspectives are given the opportunity to collaborate and provide input in the decision making process.
